Solidarity with the People of Haiti

The destructive earthquake that recently struck Haiti precipitated the greatest humanitarian catastrophe caused by natural disaster in recent history.

The destructive earthquake that recently struck Haiti precipitated the greatest humanitarian catastrophe caused by natural disaster in recent history. The death of hundreds of thousands of people and the destruction of the homes of millions of others generated irretrievable loss and dire consequences on the people of the land.

All loss causes pain, and the loss of human lives is a tragedy that calls all the people of the world to solidarity.

A large number of states joined the action of collection and distribution of essential humanitarian aid. The Government of the Republic of Serbia passed an Ordinance on financial assistance to the Republic of Haiti in the amount of 100 000 USD via Red Cross, the City of Belgrade and its citizens allocated 5 million RSD, and the Ministry of Interior engaged a five-member team at the UN Peace Mission in Haiti. At the moment food, water, tents, medicines and medical supplies are the most important.

The Haiti Parliament was completely destroyed in the earthquake. At the request of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other international organisations, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia shall offer all necessary assistance by mobilizing human and expert potential and join the realisation of the initiative to restore the Parliament in this country.

Assembly Speaker

Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic
